Arg

Left hotel 8:30 in cab. Ran into blocked street. Then blocked freeway - 90 min to CDG, arroved 10am. Then check in, nearly 30 min, then immigration, brief shopping, then 40 min security. And because of so few inspection machines we had to wait for Chicago and Philly travelers who were given priority. Finally on plane at 11:50. Walt is cranky. Sharon is more mature about all this. I, on the other hand, feel like a trapped rat. Grrrr.

great hotel - La Perle - Paris

Friendly and always helpful staff

What was for lunch?

Well, you tell me. The food was great, but sorting out menus was a fun challenge. This is from Chez Lazare in Versailles. Eating good here is less expensive than Fairfax. For 80 euro you can get two good salads, two entrees, a desert, and a carafe of good house wine. And that includes a service charge.

Last night in Paris

We had a wonderful trip. And a wonderful last night out here. Tomorrow - United Airlines to IAD. yuk.

We took a cruise on the Seine after dinner tonight. What a beautiful trip.

Venus at the Louvre

The Louvre was crowded although since we've not been there before we have no basis for comparison. Lots of people, lots of crowd. Fantastic collection, beautiful and huge building. We probably saw 5% or less. We did get down to the crypt where we saw the foundations of the original fort.

An interesting phenomena I had not noticed before is the insistence of some visitors on having their photo taken with a well known piece of art in the background (vs. looking at the art!). Eager subjects and photographers would actually gently give me a shove to move as a looked at a piece. More about them being with the art, than the art.

eating

What a pleasure. We had a delightful lunch yesterday at a very small brassirie - beef bourgignon (sp?) and duck - with some house wine. It was a big lunch so for dinner (believe it or not) we had antipasto and a small pizza from a tiny italian place across the street from the hotel. A real wood oven made the pizza special as did the other very friendly guests in the crowded place.

Attitude

An observation. We have seen no evidence of negativity toward Americans on this visit. On the contrary, we have been very well received and graciously treated. Our cab driver from the airport made it abundantly clear to us that, from his point of view, Americans did the right thing electing Obama. This made a big impact on him, and, we would guess other French men and women.

Walt at Notre Dame

Here I am in front of Notre Dame. We had not expected to walk so far, but our room was not ready and we had time on our hands. We were kind of bleary though. Sharon had trouble with her camera and it was drizzling. C'est la vie.

Getting Ready to Go!

Well, we are packed (well packed) and waiting now for the cab. No time to start some new project. With any luck we'll take off on time (5:21p) and get going. I'll have dinner and some wine and doze off, book in lap. Sharon will do much the same - but she's not much for sleeping on planes. She has her iPOD videos.

Breaux Vineyards

Sharon and I visited Breaux Vineyards today. In our opinion, Breaux puts out some of the very best VA wines. The 2007 Viognier is outstanding, as is the 2007 Lafayette - Cabernet Franc. We had a very nice couple of hours with a bottle of the Lafayette. Jada, our dog, totally enjoyed the unseasonably warm day.
